Additive Masterbatches for Polyethylene Film

What you will read:

Polyethylene film (PE film) is widely used for packaging fruits, nuts, vegetables, and various other products. In this article, we will explore the additive masterbatches commonly used in the manufacturing of PE films.

What Is Additive Masterbatch?

Additive Masterbatch (often simply called masterbatch) is a type of polymer additive used to create or enhance specific properties in plastic products. For example, during the manufacturing of plastic tanks, white masterbatch is incorporated into the base polymer (raw material) to produce a consistent white color. Another example is the use of anti-UV masterbatch in traffic equipment, which improves the UV resistance and durability of the final plastic product.

Masterbatches for PE Films

Here is a list of masterbatches that are added to the based polyethylene in manufacturing PE films:

Slip Masterbatch

Polymers generally have a high coefficient of friction (COF) and tend to adhere to themselves and to metal surfaces. This property can cause problems during manufacturing, packaging (film winding), cutting, and roll opening. To prevent this, a Slip Masterbatch is added. This type of masterbatch significantly reduces the surface friction of the polymer.

Antiblock Masterbatch

Antiblock Masterbatch functions similarly to Slip Masterbatch and prevents the accumulation or sticking of PE film surfaces together. In other words, it improves the openness of polyethylene films.

In summary, the difference between Antiblock and Slip is that Slip Masterbatch reduces the shear force between two surfaces, allowing them to slide over each other, while Antiblock Masterbatch reduces the perpendicular force between two surfaces, making it easier for them to separate.

At Aria Polymer, we produce both types of masterbatches, Slip and Antiblock. For more information about these products, please visit their product pages.

Processing Aid Masterbatch

Processing Aid Masterbatch is added to reduce the pressure on production machinery and improve the quality of the manufacturing process.

Optical Brightener Masterbatch

Optical Brightener Masterbatch (OB Masterbatch) is incorporated into polyethylene to enhance the transparency of the final film. Without this masterbatch, the film becomes cloudy.

Antiblock & Slip Mixed Masterbatch

This type of masterbatch is a blend of Antiblock and Slip masterbatches. Sometimes, manufacturers prefer to purchase a combined mix instead of buying the Antiblock and Slip masterbatches separately. It is worth noting that adding the two masterbatches separately usually performs better than using the combined mix all at once.
